Equivalent salary
same take-homeTo keep the $73,957 you now take home in California, you need $92,576 in Texas.
Same assumptions as the main calculator: single-filed federal brackets, standard deduction, Social Security and Medicare, no 401(k), premium or local tax.
How the figure is found
The calculator first works out what your current salary actually puts in your pocket after federal income tax, the state tax where you work, Social Security and Medicare. It then searches for the salary in the second state that produces that same take-home figure, using the same brackets, standard deduction and FICA thresholds.
Both sides run through the identical engine as the main calculator, so a number shown here will not disagree with the number on the home page for the same inputs.
What this ignores
It is a tax comparison, not a cost-of-living comparison. Rent, insurance, utilities and sales tax differ between states and are deliberately left out — the question here is only what salary keeps your paycheck whole.
It also assumes you are a resident of the state you earn in. If you work for an employer in one state while living in another, the rules change considerably; that situation is covered separately under remote work taxation.
Figures are tax year 2026 estimates for a single filer paid biweekly with no retirement contribution, health premium or local tax. They are not tax advice.
Where to look next
If you are weighing an actual move, our moving guides pair the tax gap with the residency and reciprocity rules that decide whether your employer withholds to the right state.
